ROMA SERVIZI PER LA MOBILITÀ S.R.L., 2009-2010

Challenge

The City of Rome’s driving public (2.7 mill inhabitants, 3rd most visited European city) suffered from a constantly congested city – a fact which made driving through the city difficult and very time consuming. The existing and meanwhile outdated UTC system was no longer adequate therefore the Roma Servizi per la Mobilità commissioned SWARCO to bring the system up-to-date.

Details

The daily traffic problems of the City of Rome have been solved by the design, supply, installation, and
configuration and testing of:

  • 1 centre for urban traffic control (hard- and software)
  • Centralization of 74 intersections (hard- and software) including traffic controllers, traffic detection devices and communication equipment
  • Conversion of the existing traffic signals to LED technology at all 74 newly installed intersections (approx. 1,400 signals)
  • Service and maintenance and spare parts for the maintenance period

Benefits

The City of Rome and its driving public benefit from the new UTC system with a greater automation and centralization in urban traffic control, state-of-the-art data communication and processing equipment as well as with an increase in reliability, display quality and energy-savings with latest LEDbased traffic signals. Furthermore, the new system results in:

  • Reduced energy costs for the local public sector due to LED technology
  • Reduction of traffic related pollution
  • Reduction of driving times and fuel consumption
  • Better traffic flow
