Challenge
The historic centre of Haifa, as well as the port and the business district are located on a narrow costal strip beneath Mount Carmel (550 m). The construction of the 2 new tunnels reduced the daily, heavy congestion in downtown Haifa and its suburbs and offers alternative driving routes on and around Mount Carmel.
Details
The complete design consists of 2 double-tunnels with a total length of 6.5 km including a complete tunnel management system with 27 road stations including central control software:

- 4 internal variable message signs (VMS with LED technology)
- 73 lane control signs
- 4 prism signs for variable routing
- 46 induction loops
- 84 traffic detection cameras
- 8 PTZ cameras
- 18 corridor motion detection cameras
- 9 routing and blocking barriers
- 2 over height controls
- 144 emergency telephones
