INTERURBAN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, Israel, Haifa

City of Haifa, 2009-2010

Challenge

The historic centre of Haifa, as well as the port and the business district are located on a narrow costal strip beneath Mount Carmel (550 m). The construction of the 2 new tunnels reduced the daily, heavy congestion in downtown Haifa and its suburbs and offers alternative driving routes on and around Mount Carmel.

Details

The complete design consists of 2 double-tunnels with a total length of 6.5 km including a complete tunnel management system with 27 road stations including central control software:

  • Central control software
  • 4 internal variable message signs (VMS with LED technology)
  • 73 lane control signs
  • 4 prism signs for variable routing
  • 46 induction loops
  • 84 traffic detection cameras
  • 8 PTZ cameras
  • 18 corridor motion detection cameras
  • 9 routing and blocking barriers
  • 2 over height controls
  • 144 emergency telephones

Benefits

  • Improved traffic flow in unbalanced traffic situations (e.g. peak times …)
  • Successful traffic monitoring to avoid congestion
  • Quick lane closure in case of an emergency
  • Real-time traffic information via VMS
  • Reduced emission
